Story
On 8th October I will be taking on the perilous task (for me anyway!) of running the Oxford half marathon. I'm honoured to be running it for two extremely different causes, both of which I care deeply about.
Firstly, I'll be running for the work of Word Made Flesh (funded by Rope) in Bolivia; work which I have only recently learnt about, but has struck and moved me to want justice. Over the last week I have had the privilege of getting to know project managers Andy and Andrea who are working in the brothels in the impoverished city of El Alto. They are working tireless to transform the lives of the women trapped in the brothels, by helping them find dignified employment, free them from the slavery of the sex trade, and provide support for them as they journey with scars from the past . It is so easy to forget that trafficking and poverty-led sex trade still occurs in other parts of the world and it is simply heartbreaking. Just as I walked 10 miles with over 60 wonderful women of all ages last week , I will be running this race to bring dignity for the women in Bolivia.
Secondly, along with a team of fantastically athletic humans from the Oxford University Wind Orchestra, I will be running to in support of the orchestra's upcoming tour to the USA (!!!). The whole band have been working their socks off to fundraise and a few of us felt this would be a fitting challenge to help raise the money to cross the pond. I am so proud of everything OUWO have achieved over the last year. I'm sure anyone who has seen any of the band's concerts will agree that there is a tangible love of both music and life that shines from all the musicians. Their desire to bring joy to audiences is inspiring and needs to be shared.
