Story
Buntu Sylla, one of my husband's sisters, lost a baby at almost full-term about a month ago now. Hospital treatment in Guinea where she lives, is not free and the family have had to sell land to pay for the treatment she needs.
Although I had some generous donations from students and friends and she has had a certain amount of treatment she is still not well. She is particularly unwell emotionally. This is partly, I think, because she has a urinary track infection - it's difficult to tell during a long-distance phone call & she has no French and I have only limited Susu so my husband has to help translate both ways. This will require another expensive trip to a hospital which is not geographically close. Or an even more expensive consultation with a local 'clinic', neither of which the family can now afford.
It's also very difficult for a woman to recover fully from a miscarriage when she's on the edge of malnutrition and the family are very very poor so a couple of months of eating well would be very helpful.
The third reason I'm fundraising is that she's scared of getting pregnant again (she has 6 children already) & would like to get 'medicine' to help prevent conception. She has very little education and an extremely controlling and unsympathetic husband. While her brother - my husband - is currently in Guinea he can help her negotiate with hospitals etc..

7 years agoA HUGE thank-you from me and Moussa & all the Sylla family. This will be just over £650 with the fees taken, about £600 when all the phone-calls are paid for. After I've paid back what was lent out of this, which paid for the D&C, there will be about £400 which will enable Buntu to have another check-up & be enough to buy some more market stock & start working again. She's much better already, she did some washing yesterday (a very physical activity in West Africa with a washboard and big tub, with a lot of heavy lifting involved).

7 years agoBuntu still improving. she's able to walk much more easily now. Hopefully by the time she gets this money she'll be well enough to start her market activities again and so will be able to use some of it to buy new stock in order to start over.

7 years agoBuntu is finally starting to improve - she's walking more easily and in much less pain. She's got a course of medicine to finish and the medicine for maleria also but is so much better in health and spirits it's almost miraculous...

7 years agoBuntu has been back to the hospital (thanks to the generous loan of some of this money by a friend of mine) & - I think - had what we call here a 'D&C'. She says she's feeling much better & can now walk. She want very much for me to pass on her gratitude to my 'women's association' for the money. We've got another 3 way phone call booked in for tomorrow evening so I'll have a bit more info after that. Love and blessings to all of those who are helping her recovery.
