Story
The ex-husband of a friend of mine, a Guinean resident in the Gambia, has just died after a very long illness. This leaves her in a really difficult position as she has been living with friends since their divorce 3 years ago and the children stayed with him. She now has nowhere to live as there is no space at her friends for the kids. She has no regular work. The Gambia is a VERY poor country - 168th out of 187 in the UN poverty index. There is little possibility of work for her other than taking in washing or selling food in the streets, both of which need a house to operate from. She can't go back to the house they used to live in as the rent had been unpaid for ages due to his illness. I want to help her to get somewhere for the 3 of them to live so they can pick up their lives again after some very difficult years caring for him (which she continued to help to do even after leaving). Both children are very intelligent and are sponsored by friends of mine - they go to school and work really hard. Ousemane comes 1st or 2nd in his class EVERY year. They deserve a chance at a decent life

6 years agoAdja and the children want me to share their love & gratitude to everyone who helped raise this money. There is enough for them to get somewhere to live and for Adja to buy some chairs so she can start a little business renting them (quite lucrative in West Africa where just about every social function requires renting chairs). Thankyou for helping me to help a great friend & a wonderful mother.

6 years agoWe did it!!! Many many thanks to all those who supported this and gave so generously - Adja will be utterly delighted. This amount of money will enable her to get a decent place for her & the children & pay at least 6 months rent to secure it.

6 years agoThanks to everyone who donated in support of International women's day yesterday. Secretly I'd love to manage £1000 to send. Adja know's I'm doing this but has no idea of the amount raised, she probably thinks that, as usual it'll be £50 or £100 which is what I can, personally generally manage - can't wait to let her know it's a significant amount!
