Story

Help to pay our Dear Mum Agnes Waganda Otieno’s medical bills

Yesterday we started writing the fundraising campaign under the headline, “HELP SAVE OUR MUM” in the hope she would be coming home. But at midnight the hospital called to say she had passed away. We are all devastated. Mum was always as strong as an ox - rarely ill herself but a constant care giver way beyond her own family. After months of hospital visits and tests, last week the doctors dropped the bombshell no one ever wants to hear. Dear Mum was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer which had spread to her stomach lining. But before we had a chance to process this dreadful news she got a very serious liver infection for which she was being treated at the High Dependency Unit in Nairobi Hospital. Over the last few days she was only able to utter a few words when we lifted her oxygen mask. We can’t cope with the astronomical medical bills. We need help. We’ve set up this fundraising campaign and any help will be greatly appreciated as well as your thoughts and prayers during this trying time. With great affection, Agnes Waganda Otieno’s family.

It was very sad that our son never got to meet my mother his darling Grandmother but at least he got to meet my Grandmother his awesome Great Grandmother Nelly Juma Waganda. We are grateful for all of those who are giving. Slowly slowly we are chipping away at the bills.

So today we have set a date for Mums burial 29th of September 2018. This will be very poignant in years to come as our darling son Nash was born on the 27th of September 2017. I rushed home hoping his grandmother could meet him but alas we were not allowed into the hospital with a baby. I am saddened that he did not meet her but they are now tied together in dates and will forever have that link. It will always be bittersweet from here on. Here is Mum with Dad on a happy occasion being enthralled by the streets of Lagos.

Christine and Will: I am so sorry for your loss - and doubly sorry that you are now stuck with such a monumental bill - for medical care which came too late. Life is so unfair.
