On the 4th March I am completing my first half marathon in Cambridge. When it came to supporting a charity I realised that not only do these guys help us get patient in to hospital by using advanced skills and bringing a little bit of the hospital out in to the community. They also run amazing teaching sessions that have supported my learning. Get donating for a great cause!

Who Are We?

BASICS-Hertfordshire are a group of volunteer doctors, paramedics and nurses. We give up our time to attend the scenes of major accidents and medical emergencies, in order to provide life-saving care to those in need.

What Do We Do?

We drive on blue lights and sirens, and are trained by the East of England Ambulance Service to the same driving standards as ambulance crews. We carry a wide variety of drugs and equipment, and can provide care over and above what a standard paramedic can do. Examples of the procedures we can perform on scene include:

Advanced pain relief

Intravenous access in difficult circumstances

Surgical decompression of the chest

Advanced airway manoeuvres, including intubation and ventilation, and surgical airways

Thoracotomy

We also bring with us many years of working with the victims of severe trauma, and our expertise gained in the Emergency Departments in which we work.
