Story
There has been a church in the village of Chaddesley Corbett since the 11th century. The National Pipe organ register lists the organ as being built in 1817 by Thomas Elliot, a prolific 19th Century organ builder based in London. The organ was presented to the church by James Pratt Esq of Sion House and was erected at his expense.
In 1884 the organ was enlarged at a cost of £250 by Banfield & Son of Birmingham.
It was rebuilt in 1909 by W J Bird of Birmingham.
Nicholson’s of Malvern carried out further work in 1961.
The most significant change occurred in 1974 when Bishop & Son were involved in rebuilding the organ and moving it from its position in the South aisle to its new home in the west gallery.
Further work was carried out in the 1980s and 1990s by Trevor Tipple of Worcester.
Despite the work done many of the original Elliot pipes remain and the casework is original.
The organ is now in desperate need of an overhaul and repair. Reports commissioned by the church have shown that the pipes are in danger of collapse or have already collapsed, that the blower requires significant repair and all of the electrics need to be replaced.
The organ is used weekly for services of Holy Communion, Worship for All, Morning worship and Evensong. It is used for weddings, funerals and special events. It is much loved and valued by the community.
