Story

In 2011 SeeItPickItBinIt, the Kettering arm of Litter Action UK, began its volunteer campaign, to save the local community from the onslaught of toxic plastic and litter. Each year since our creation, we have held regular picks on our days off from Asda, but also run a special sponsored event called the 1 Tonne litter pick. This project removes over a 1000KG of litter from Kettering's greenspaces, at the same time as raising money for good causes, such as Children in Need and Nanna's animal rescue in Irthlingborough. So far we've removed and mostly recycled, about 10,000KG of litter and average about 1000 volunteer hours per year.

This year's event, sparked in to action by the Blue Planet documentary last year, is focusing its efforts on removing 1000KG+ of plastic from the River Ise and Nene in Northants. Walk along the Ise and you can see plastic every few feet, not only floating, but also woven in to the banks and undergrowth. We learnt that plastic has entered the UK food chain in fish and other animals. Even more shockingly, plastic is now found in 72% of UK tap water. Unfortunately, this work is not without its risks, due to the hundreds of uncapped syringes that we find in and around the river system. Also our boots don't allow us to get in to the deeper sections to remove all the plastic that we find.

With this in mind, we have set up this justgiving page, to hopefully raise enough money so that we can specifically buy some professional grade anti-syringe gloves, deep waders and several 6ft long Streetmaster Pro litter pickers. If we can buy this equipment, we can really hit the problem hard and achieve both our weight target and the wider goal of transforming the county's rivers through positive action. If you saw the documentary and wondered what you could do to combat this plastic disaster, here's your chance to be part of the solution. We welcome all volunteers on our picks around the Kettering area, but if you can't make it, then it's just as good to donate a few pounds, so that we can halt the tide of marine plastic pollution in Northamptonshire. Thanks, Nick.

Yesterday I did a walk of the River Ise in Burton Latimer to Finedon Road to pick up some plastic and assess where we most need to pick. There are some really heavy blockages, filled with plastic bottles etc and the banks fo the Kettering Arena are more like a rubbish dump than an aquatic habitat. Over the next several months, we'll be tackling the old Leisure village lake and woodlands, as well as the River Ise between Warkton and Wellingborough. We have discovered that we've lost our £300 Aviva funding, so please dig deep. Cheers, Nick.

Managed to get my first tenner from a passer by, during my pick of the Redrow dog walking area in Barton Seagrave, formerly known as 'The countryside', ha. (that dead hedgehog isn't laughing).
