Weʼre raising £500 to help fund the Colvestone Conversations parklet

What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.

The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

Story

We've turned a parking space into a parklet - a place for people to sit, chat and relax on Colvestone Crescent.

Following the example of a parklet set up by someone outside her house in London Fields, Hackney Council are running a programme to support 15 parklets and a few of the Colvestone Crescent residents have secured one of them for our road.

On 3 February 2019 and until the end of June, we’ll be installing a parklet consisting of a seating area, a PlantLock and blackboards outside of no. 23 Colvestone Crescent. We’ve used Ridley Road market inspired materials like palles and have created a parklet that offers somewhere for people to sit down after shopping, adding to cycle parking space and some plants. It is not without challenges given the levels of traffic and the resulting air pollution, but we see a benefit of the parklet as a way to have a constructive discussion about that too.

The Hackney Council website provides more information about the parklet scheme.

The Council is contributing £250 to the cost which leaves us approx. £350 short. (Plus we'd love to contribute to a new pair of glasses for Tom, whose glasses broke while building the parklet deck - thus an adjusted target of £500).

Expenses include £167 for a Public Liability Insurance which is a council requirement, plus materials including decking, timber, paint, blackboard paint, bags of compost plus plants.

We’d love in kind donations too and will reduce the fundraising target accordingly if/when these are made.

In other news: 1) We have a Parklet Twitter account: follow us on @CParklet - https://twitter.com/CParklet 2) The community has been incredibly generous in helping us reach our fundraising target - thank you! 3) If we could raise a little extra money, we'd love to use it to contribute to a new pair of glasses for Tom, whose glasses broke while building the parklet deck on Sunday

A quick update: parklet building over the building was an amazing community effort, spearheaded by the amazing Tom, as our lead builder. Will and Steve were amazing in supporting the building of the deck and Judith, Jane, Kathryn and others helped with all sorts of things from planting, sourcing tools, getting materials from A to B and feeding our building crew. By the end of Sunday we had a beautiful deck, the makings of a bench, and a PlantLock. We're hoping to build the bench this week and weather permitting, paint it too.

Hi! I took a quick look at the parklet budget over lunch before it's back to parklet building: expenses add up to approx £550 now so I have increased the fundraising target to £300 (£250 is the council's contribution). Key expenses so far have been decking materials approx £315, insurance £167 plus smaller amounts on market awning, paint and plants. Please help spread the word & feel free to pop by this afternoon to get stuck in.

I live on Colvestone Crescent together with my partner and little daughter. I love our neighbourhood and community and the idea of turning parking spaces into mini parks . Conversations with neighbours, somewhere to lock your bike, enjoy a rest & admire flowers in lieu of a car.
