Weʼve raised £4,208 to fund cancer research

Funded on Thursday, 14th June 2018

    Story

Unfortunately, my mother, Steffi, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in October 2017. She is currently undergoing chemotherapy. She is in good spirits and is trying to stay positive.

Modern medicine still doesn’t understand exactly what causes pancreatic cancer with only some general risk factors being known. All of the symptoms can have a range of multiple other causes, and there is not yet a reliable diagnostic test for pancreatic cancer.

I chose not to include the survival rate statistic in this note as it isn't favourable. Generally speaking though, improvements in survival rates vary considerably between cancer types, with some cancers showing significant improvement in survival rates over time. However, the 5 year survival rate for pancreatic cancer has not changed in 40 years. So more research needs to be done!

In order to raise awareness and funds for further research, I signed up to ride the St. Pöltner Radmarathon on 10 June 2018 - a 158 km cycling sportive event in my mum’s home province of Lower Austria. Also labelled as ‘“the hardest in the East” in Austria by the organisers.

I selected the Austrian research institute “Institut für Krebsforschung” which is part of the Medical University Vienna and Comprehensive Cancer Center with a focus on pancreatic cancer research.

I set myself a target of £3,000, which could fund e.g. urgently needed medical equipment such as scales or shakers to undertake much needed further research.

If you can spare a few ££'s, €€’s, A$’s, CHF’s for a cause that is close to my heart, then please donate now!

Many thanks in advance! All donations and positive thoughts are truly appreciated!

Bad, great, amazing news.. Amazing news:CT scans indicate mum is cancer free! More tests will determine the need for radiation, but we are so grateful for this progress and the support and love from so many! Great news:you have been so generous and donated €4,360 so far! The website remains open until next week and I will round it up to the next €1k. Bad news:I had to postpone my ride due to a strained knee ligament. I am still going to do a charity cycle event. Will keep you posted. Thank you so much for your wonderful support and generosity!

Quick update on my mum's progress: recent tests showed that she is currently cancer free! Although this is amazing news and lifts all our spirits enormously, there is a small 'but' to it. Apparently the relapse rate at this stage is as high as 50%. So mum is currently undergoing another 3x3 cycles. We'll keep our fingers crossed and prayers up! A massive thank you to all who have donated so generously! We've met our target and are deeply grateful! As you know, there is always more that could be done (like with my cycling training). Stay tuned.

This is just a quick note to say thank you! Within a very weeks, we are only £2 (!) short of our fundraising target! That's absolutely amazing and we are very grateful for your generousity! We still have 16 weeks to go until my cycling event, so surely we can make this target! Thanks also for the kind words of support and well wishes! Mum is doing well as you can see on the photo!
