My son was born with bilateral moderare hearing loss (75db) meaning he needs hearing aids for life and can't hear speech without them. When he turned 3 the teacher for the deaf lent us a radio aid, one part connects to the hearing aids and the other to a person or tv/computer/phone as he gets older. This technology means, background noise, which is all brought to the same level as somebody next to you speaking by the hearing aids, is dimmed down so you can clearly hear what the person is saying. This means when we are reading a story, playin games, in an enviroment with background noise like a shop or play group, or crossing the road he can hear me talking to him clearly and giving instructions both for communication development as a young child, learning new words, sound association, how to read and safety as he can't always hear the cars or tell direction/speed as sounds the same. Due to the cut in government funding he will receive no help in school, such as a ta to check he has heard the explanation from the teacher and no funds to make environmental changes such as soft furnishings to help echos etc. We have therefore decided to home educate as I am a qualified teacher and there is a big network in the area for social interaction so he would not miss out. Because of this choice which is to benefit him, we will not be entitled to the support of the teacher of the deaf (guidence and monitoring of his progress) which would have continued if he went to state school. We will also have to return the radio aid at the beginning of summer as it is funded through the education system not nhs so a cross in services. We are full tax payers and understand we do not receive help with education if choosing to not use state education, however, when support with a disability is cut we feel it is very unfair. My son needs this equipment. It has made a huge positive impact to his and our lives but at £2000 we cannot afford to buy him this life changing technology. Please help us.
