Story
'Lee’s Footsteps' is a Charitable Trust created in loving memory of Lee Dodd.
On Wednesday 16th August 2017, Lee set off on his morning walk into the Derbyshire countryside with his dog Marley. During his walk Lee collapsed and suffered a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). Despite the very best efforts of passers-by, the Ambulance Service and the Air Ambulance to resuscitate Lee, he sadly passed away. He was 51 years old.
Lee was an extremely kind and generous man who would always look to help others. Therefore Lee’s Wife, Joanne and Daughter, Danielle wanted to learn from Lee’s tragic death and help to improve the chances of survival from SCA, as Lee would have done if he had survived. They quickly realised that the lack of a nearby Defibrillator and the unavoidable delay in getting this life-saving equipment to Lee when he collapsed, significantly reduced his chances of being successfully resuscitated.
In creating 'Lee’s Footsteps', Joanne and Danielle want to improve access to Defibrillators in their local community and the surrounding rural footpaths. This, combined with a raised awareness of SCA and early CPR and Defibrillation, will help to give others the best possible chance of survival if the worst was to also happen to them.
The Resuscitation Council (2015 ) identify that Defibrillation within 3-5 minutes of collapse can help to achieve a survival rate of 50-70%. Each minute thereafter that Defibrillation is not performed will reduce the chances of survival to hospital discharge by 10%. With this in mind, 'Lee’s Footsteps' has been created with a mission to:
Fundraise to provide Public-Access Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) near to rural public footpaths and local communities.
Raise an awareness of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) and the importance of early CPR and Defibrillation.
Educate the public through the provision of CPR and Defibrillator training sessions in the communities where Defibrillators are installed.
