Story
SAVING THE LAST SHOP
Situated on the hill between Lewisham and Deptford, Dartmouth Village was once home to many shops, schools, a post office and even a dairy. Now only the church and a single Victorian retail unit remain. This is the shop local residents are trying to save from development into flats, for everyone who lives in the area - now and into the future.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
We don't want to see this last shop go the way of so many other community resources. Not on our watch and not without a fight! We have until June 2017 to establish a viable enterprise there before the shop's protected status runs out and it is converted into flats.
All other shops are a significant walk, down one of two steep hills or 40 minutes across the heath and back. Car free accessibility to local amenities is a real issue for many people who live here.
We’d like to be given the chance to develop something special: a community shop run by over 30 volunteers, connecting our diverse community, helping people back into work and serving the needs of the 450 households on the hill.
WHY DO WE NEED TO RAISE SO MUCH MONEY?
We will be operating on a not-for-profit basis with the assistance of over 30 volunteer staff and a community subsidy but it won't be enough.
We need to start 2017 with enough funds to ensure that we can cover our lease and running expenses, as well as fit out costs and the salary of a full-time manager.
We are in the process of establishing an Industrial & Provident Society for the benefit of the community which will manage the funds raised. We also plan to raise a community share issue to ensure that everyone has a say in how the project develops. Any profits that we make will be reinvested back into local charities in Lewisham and Deptford.
Should we not meet our fundraising target, we will return all donor funds.
PLEASE HELP TO GIVE THE COMMUNITY THIS CHANCE - EVERY £1 CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
