Story
This is the 3rd road race that I have done this year, the previous 2 were for cancer charities, this one is to try and raise funds to cover medical treatment for a friends son-in-law, for those of you interested in following my training (or lack of!) you can follow me on Strava, below is Calum's story, please give generously.
Calum Riddell, 28 years old, footballer, golfer, hard worker, friend to many and most recently on the 22nd July, became husband to his best friend Rebekah has fallen victim to a devastating brain tumour. While Calum and Rebekah were on honeymoon they received the shattering news; stage 4 Glioblastoma.
Calum had been experiencing some dizziness at the start of the year but this progressed to him having double vision at work, which meant he was no longer able to drive and therefore unable to work. He continuously sought consultation from clinics but they diagnosed the symptoms as migraines and asked to pursue an eye test. Calum did as he was asked but the symptoms persisted and unfortunately was getting worse day by day. Finally at the start of June, the doctors agreed to a MRI but not until the 19th June. Calum decided to seek a second opinion from another local optician, who straightaway referred him to Raigmore for an immediate MRI. Within 5 days they had the devastating news it was a brain tumour and within 7 days he was meeting the neurosurgeon and his team in Aberdeen Hospital. A biopsy was preformed just 2 weeks before their wedding, but nothing was going to stop the biggest most important day of their lives.
Calum has been unable to work since May due to the effects this has had on his day to day life, we are hoping with your support and donations that we are able to source him the best treatment available, whether it be in the UK or anywhere around the world. His life has just begun with his wife Rebekah, we want to be able to give them the best chance possible.
Calum will now go for a second opinion in Glasgow which was referred by the Aberdeen medical consultants. We are unsure at this point on whether there are alternative treatments available or a trial treatment that has been developed and available to Calum. In the absence of progress in the UK the plan would be to exhaust possibilities in research clinics/institutions around the world and continue to pursue a medical resolution.
