Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.

This Sunday (14th October), I will be running the York Marathon in aid of Gambling with Lives, suggested by the family of Lewis Keogh, a friend who tragically took his own life in 2013 after suffering from gambling addiction. Their aim is to raise awareness about gambling addiction, other addictions, and mental health and I hope to raise money for this fantastic fledgling charity.
It’s been 5 years since completing the first York Marathon (my only attempt and one that Lewis described as “just running”) and the years in between don’t seem to have been kind, so I’m fully expecting this to be a lot tougher. I am running this event with Dan, who has managed to lose an astonishing 7 stone in training, Rees, who is looking to break the 4 hour mark that he narrowly missed out on previously and Garry, running his first marathon and a fellow Sheffield Wednesday fan. Any donations for Sunday’s suffering would be greatly appreciated!
Gambling with Lives was set up by the families and friends of young men who have taken their own lives as a direct result of gambling. These were all very normal, bright, popular and happy young men who had great futures ahead of them … gambling was their only problem. Their deaths were very sudden – “out of the blue” with no warning. They were not the result of massive gambling debts, rather what gambling had done to their hearts and their heads.
Gambling with Lives aims to:
- Raise awareness amongst gamblers, their families and friends, and health professionals of just how dangerous gambling can be
- Campaign to reduce gambling related harm through greater regulation of gambling products
- Campaign for more and better treatment for gamblers, integrated with the NHS, and support for families and friends
- Ensure that families and friends bereaved by gambling influence the decision making of government and the bodies responsible for regulating the gambling industry
