    Story

After years of campaigning by the David Oluwale Memorial Association (DOMA) for a Leeds Civic Trust Blue Plaque, on Monday the 25th April 2022, David's plaque was finally unveiled by Caryl Phillips in front of a huge crowd.

Within hours, the blue plaque had been wrenched from its place and stolen, and the Trust offices targeted by disgusting racist graffiti. This is being treated as a possible hate crime, and West Yorkshire Police are actively investigating.

Leeds is better than this, and we are a city united. This cowardly act will not stop us commemorating David's life and legacy. To find out more about David and how vital it is to commemorate his legacy, please click here.

Leeds City Council is fully behind us and is keen to replace the plaque and improve security in the area. Let's make this a plaque of the people - by the people, and one that supports DOMA in their vital work to truly show that racism is not tolerated in our city.

Should we reach our target, we will use funding to strengthen DOMA's work to further David's legacy - highlighting issues of race, homelessness, mental ill-health and migration. To find out more about DOMA's work, please visit https://rememberoluwale.org/index.html

Leeds Civic Trust is a registered charity, and work to make the city of Leeds the best it can be. We are proud to be the custodians of the city's Blue Plaques scheme and welcome nominations from members of the public. Our plaques are not currently representative of the city's rich and diverse heritage therefore we would be particularly welcoming of nominations for people places and events that are currently underrepresented.
