My Name is Deelan. I'm a 15 year old from Dominican Republic who attends St Georges School in Harpenden. I'm very fortunate to be growing up in a very supportive environment and have all my basic needs covered. I visited my home country last year and had the opportunity to witness a lot of poverty first hand. I want to commit myself to make a difference in the world and I feel Borneo its an amazing opportunity to give back. Please help me raise money to allow me to make a difference.
My parents brought me to Spain when I was aged six months old. We then moved to the UK Three and a half years later. As a FOUR year old, I lived in inner city LONDON for a short while. Before we moved to Watford when I was aged SIX. My parents worked hard to make a living, but found it difficult to develop careers and meet the costs of living and look after me and my younger sisters. As a result my sisters and I moved to Spain to live with our grandparents. Our Dad came with us, but our Mum stayed behind to work and study to become a dentist in the UK. She was qualified as a dentist is Dominican Republic, but she needed to pass her exams in the UK to be allowed to work here.
This lasted for two years. My Mum would come and see us when she could. We really missed her. I knew she was working hard as she would send us money and bring us gifts when she came to see us.
Eventually my Mum passed her exam and became registered as a dentist. This changed our lives. We moved back to England. My Mum found us a house to rent in Harpenden. Although it was small, it was great to be back together again.
I went to school at High Beeches for Year 6 before getting a place at St George’s.
We moved house twice after that before my Mum bought a house last year. We are very happy in our new home and have a lot of privileges. I appreciate that I am so lucky to have a Mum that never gives up and always wants to achieve her goals and look after me and my sisters.
