    Story

This could save lives, please read

My aim is to purchase 3 defibrillators and lockers and place in train stations between Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Each defibrillator costs £1,152 and a further £606.00 for their security locker.

This is my story... Whilst traveling on the Glasgow to Edinburgh train, I had an unfortunate incident that involved me requiring shocks from a defibrillator device due to a heart arrhythmia developed just 2 weeks before.

Thankfully, the NHS had installed such a device in my chest. This device shocked me 7 times whilst on the train, a very traumatic experience. During the chaos, I could overhear the train staff scrambling to get a defibrillator in case my own failed, and I heard them say the closest was 30 minutes away in Edinburgh.

Now, although this wasn't entirely true due to defibrillators being in other locations in the town we had stopped at, Defibrillators must be reachable within minutes as every minute that passes in such a medical emergency that it takes for a defib to reach the person, reduces their chances of survival of 7 to 10 percent. There must be a defib either at the station or on the train itself.

If I had not had my own device in my chest, I would have certainly died. We must do better, with millions of people traveling that route every year people will need our help, they will need a defibrillator.

Please understand how strongly I feel about this, every minute that passes in such a medical emergency that it takes for a defib to reach the person, reduces their chances of survival of 7 to 10 percent.

A spokesman for ScotRail has responded to me, I have placed their reply below.

ScotRail recognises the importance of having facilities of this nature both on their rail network and in society in general. In 2019, they introduced and installed a programme of defibrillators across their network.

In 2019, as part of an initiative to introduce Defibrillators on their network, they secured funding from Transport Scotland to install 34 defibrillator units across their station network.

Since the initial installation, they have engaged and collaborated with stakeholders, including Scottish Ambulance Services and local community groups to support the installation of an additional 15 units, bringing the current total of defibrillators at ScotRail managed stations to 49.

Whilst they cannot guarantee that we will be able to roll out units across all of their stations and trains, they do recognise that there is more to be done in this area. They are continually looking for opportunities to secure funding and increase the availability of defibrillator units across their station network.

My aim is to assist them with this... but I need your help as it WILL save lives. Be part of that, be a life saver.
