Story
The scenes in Denmark on Saturday involving Christian Eriksen really shook me and caught me by surprise – it was a very difficult watch.
To see such a fit and healthy person suddenly drop to the ground, suffer a cardiac arrest, and then receive CPR in front of thousands of people was truly shocking.
Reports suggest that just one shock with a defibrillator brought him back, which is enough to highlight the importance of these machines.
As someone who has had minor heart problems in the past, it really hit home; if this can happen to him, it could easily happen to me and any other normal person.
I saw a tweet online stating all football clubs should have a defibrillator on site, and it made me think, how many actually have access to these machines?
I put the Facebook post out thinking that maybe one or two clubs wouldn’t have one – 12 clubs responded within 24hours, after the post reached tens of thousands of people.
This really highlighted that there is a severe lack of defibrillators across the county, in areas such as football and sports clubs where they could be called to action very often, at any time.
In my opinion, this is unacceptable and there is an opportunity to put this right.
I (Vertex Architecture) pledged to buy one defibrillator for a club, which I shall still do. However, given the response, I don’t think it is fair, safe or sensible to forget about the other 11 or so clubs.
This has presented an opportunity to raise funds to help clubs all across the county, trying to provide as many defibrillators as we possibly can. If one saves a life, it will be worth all the effort and money.
I have already had offers from electricians offering their services for installation, first aid trainers offering to train club representatives on the use of defibrillators, and local businesses offering monetary contributions to the cause.
The response to the initial post has been absolutely incredible, and this strikes me as an opportunity to do some good for the community.
We have not set a target for the amount we would like to raise, but my office will be contacting local businesses seeking donations, I also encourage people to come forward with contributions too.
The list of clubs is growing, and I encourage people to continue to put suitable clubs forward.
