Moon’s Moat is a designated historic landmark and the site of a former medieval moated house in the middle of a residential area between Arley Close and Barnwood Close in Church Hill.
It is believed the site dates from the 13th century but was abandoned in the 17th century and fell into disrepair. Excavations of the site took place in the late 1960s/early 1970s and Archaeological excavations uncovered the foundations of a house, bridge and moat walls and the moat can still be seen very much as it was.
The Moons Moat Conservation Group was formed to preserve and promote the site. THat work continues today with a new 10 year management plan agreed by HIstoric England.
Now a new partnership between the Moons Moat Group, the Church Hill big Local Partnership and Redditch Borough Council, and in parallel with the ten-year management plan,we are pursuing an Outreach Plan to promote the site and encourage local groups to use the site for the benefit of the community.
This initiative is focussed upon the creation of a Community Wildlife Garden and Forest School to inform, involve and motivate children in history, wildlife, ecology and conservation matters.
The Wildlife Garden will enable them to see and share the flora and forna native to the area. The Forest School will provide an outdoor classroom their schools can use and the Way Station trail a route of dicovery for inquisative minds.
Most of all it will be an area that all the community can share and enjoy.
Visit the Moons Moat Web Site for more details of the site and our plans for it.
