    Story

    Olá a todos!

On the 24th September, I will be running - well, more likely huffing and puffing - my first ever 10K race on Roosevelt Island in New York to raise money for a NGO in Brazil that works with children and teenagers living in extreme poverty ...and just a few days later I will be heading to Brazil to work with the NGO, using the funds I've raised to develop and launch live a communications campaign designed to help these young people secure job opportunities to break out of the cycle of generational poverty. And did I mention that this is all to be done in the space of just 30 days?! So what's the story behind this?!

This October I will be developing a communications campaign for Espaço da Criança, a NGO based in the city of Recife (northeast Brazil) that provides schooling, food, shelter and protection for children aged 4 to 12 years old who are living in extreme poverty in the most underprivileged areas of the city, often the favelas. Many of the families are trapped in a cycle of drug-trafficking and prostitution. Due to the fact that EC only works with children aged 4 to 12 years old, once the teenagers turn thirteen and leave the institution, they no longer have a safety net and a support structure in place and are unassisted by local programs. This coupled with the fact that local drug dealers look to recruit children at this age into trafficking mean that many of EC’s former students are lost to crime, drug addiction and homelessness. Earlier this year our research revealed 25 of EC’s former students have been either killed or arrested due to drug related problems.

To break this cycle and support the teenagers during the vulnerable years after they leave the children’s center, Espaço da Criança has developed an apprenticeship program that will help the adolescents access the local job market by providing them with the necessary training and skills from an early age (13 years old) so they can be hired by local businesses when they turn 16. According to Brazilian law, 5 to 15% of a company’s workforce should be composed of young apprentices, starting at age 16. This is a fantastic opportunity for EC’s apprenticeship program, which is tailored to meet the needs of local businesses, to provide an excellent pipeline of talent for employers looking to recruit. EC's apprenticeship program launched this September with our first intake of students starting their classes!

In the space of one short month, our goal is to develop a campaign to generate long-term support and funding from local businesses in the community, with the view to get them to sponsor the students from an early age so they can develop the necessary skills to fit the company’s needs and be hired once they graduate from the apprenticeship program. It's a WIN WIN for everyone. Young people get to acess the job market and secure an income so bringing about more stability to their lives; employers get skilled apprentices and a pipeline of future employees; and the community benefits from an economic boost with lower levels of unemployment and from their young people being kept safe.

On the 24th September I will be running my first ever 10K race to fund the communications efforts of Espaço da Criança during my one month placement. Everything you give will go directly towards funding access to long-term opportunities for young people living in very difficult and challenging conditions. For those who know me, ensuring access to opportunities among young people from under-privileged backgrounds is an issue that I care strongly about and that largely stems from my background. I come from a low-income family and grew up in public housing, which included periods of homelessness. Despite the challenges my family faced, I had a loving, nurturing childhood and my parents always encouraged my sister and I to achieve educationally and to aspire to be anything we wanted to be. You could say the sky was NOT the limit! At the age of eleven, I won a full scholarship to a private school and from there went on to study at Oxford University. All of this wouldn’t have been possible without the help of my family, teachers and many other support structures in place.

And that's the point here. A strong support system and access to opportunities are crucial if young people are to be the best versions of themselves and achieve their dreams and aspirations. That's why we're focused on developing a long-term social mobility strategy that supports young people in this community during their teenage years. By enabling them to become economically independent, they will be able to support their families and crucially start building their future. Any amount you can donate, small or big, is much appreciated.

All we are doing is providing access to opportunities, and that can only be a wonderful thing! Muito obrigada! Dhatri xoxo
