Story

Helping pets and children in deprived areas of Bogota

What is happening?

Colombia has just finished a 50-year insurgency that has brutalized large sectors of society. It does not have an organization equal in size and influence to the RSPCA or RSPCC. Deprived areas of Bogota suffer from many cases of neglect of family pets with a consequent impact on children, themselves often leading difficult lives on or under the poverty line. There are also many stray dogs that families can no longer keep. Support is needed for the small charities that are struggling to make a difference.

Why do I need to know?

One charity, Casita Feliz, could serve as a model for others but is in desperate need of support. It sees a daily struggle for survival. Its devoted helpers lack the time and facilities and, above all, know-how to exploit the global, connected society to secure funding, advice, moral support and offers of assistance.

Casita Feliz is very cost-effective. All donations go directly to helping the pets or to allowing families to adopt pets, with no deductions for administrative costs, salaries etcetera. Owing to the low-cost model used, each pet costs between £10 -£50 pounds per month to support, depending on size, medical needs, caring needs and so on. This cost could be bought down further if the charity could purchase its own land to house and exercise the dogs (about £50k.)

At present, Casita Feliz is caring for about 50 dogs and 5 cats. These live either in the reception centre in central Bogota or are rotated out to a country facility where they have large areas to recover, exercise and socialize. Where safe and practical, the animals are reintegrated into the families as soon as possible after having received appropriate medical assistance and the families have received advice and support.

The main costs are rental costs of land, food, vet services, medicines and helpers’ expenses.

What action do I need to take?

Using your subject matter expertise. construct an innovative strategy to support Casita Feliz. This would be focused on social media to raise awareness, secure regular funding and also to encourage individuals in Bogota to lend their time and support. Consideration should also be given to other ways of reducing costs and creating income from commercial activity.

Looking further ahead, devise a strategy to allow Casita Feliz to become a model for more social responsibility in Colombia’s post conflict society. One long term aim would be to make maltreatment of children and animals less accepted.
