Weʼre raising £200 to raise funds for BEAT - the UK eating disorder charity, and to help fund my Gold D of E residential
Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.
The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.
D of E is all about pushing yourself further than you thought possible, then challenging yourself to do the impossible.
Having got to Gold, I am now preparing to go on a residential in order to complete it. I will be away from home for 6 days, aboard a boat with people I have never met before, learning how to cope when things go wrong (and right!) at sea. I am also fundraising for BEAT - the UK's national Eating disorder charity - as without them, I wouldn't be where I am now, preparing to take on this challenge. To be honest, I might not even be alive.
If you had asked me 3 years ago whether I would be able to travel away from home for a week, staying in an unknown environment with complete strangers, I would have certainly said no. But thanks to the forums and helplines that provided constant support when my illness was at its most controlling, I am now planning on doing just that! Beat provides what sufferers of eating disorders usually need most: an ear to listen and access to a community of people going through the same thing you are fighting. With all the stigma surrounding complex illnesses such as anorexia, it is very easy to feel isolated - but Beat helps you to understand that YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
So as I prepare to head off on my next adventure and take on a new set of challenges, it seems only right to give back to the charity that quite frankly saved my life.
