Story
What is the Eastern European Climate Camp?
It is a youth camp, which aims to bring experienced activists and newcomers to the climate movement together for 5 days to strategize, discuss key issues affecting the region and further strengthen the climate movement in Eastern Europe. We see the necessity to organize an Eastern European Climate Camp because the majority of the time activists and organizers of our region do not have an opportunity to gather, discuss the most pressing regional issues and find ways to address them. Besides, the perspectives of our region are often forgotten at international climate negotiations, including COPs, so it is of great importance for us to come together and coordinate our positions.
The climate crisis, long-lasting and just peace and security in the region are priority issues shared by civil society across Eastern Europe, even more so since Russia’s full-scale war in Ukraine. These concerns have also been raised by activists at the Eastern European Climate Camp which took place in October 2022 in Prague, Czech Republic. The camp was the first of its kind to happen within the region and successfully brought around 100 activists together. The urgency to continue the work that began in Prague is now greater than ever, with the rise of pro-Russian sentiments in Europe and continued political resistance to climate action. We know that in-person gatherings like these have enormous power to inspire us to collectively mobilize to unite for a common vision for change.
This year's climate camp is organized by a partnership of Rozviy and Lives Over Fossils. Rozviy is a Ukrainian feminist climate initiative working on educating and creating opportunities for youth, especially young women to engage in climate policy. LOF is a collective of Eastern European climate activists who are curating their own platform and writing about the latest political & climate affairs of the region.
