I am going to Sri Lanka on a psychology placement in the summer for 5 weeks and need to raise funds to be able to accomplish this. I am currently a psychology student with a passion for helping people with mental health issues. I have learned about techniques used in Western cultures but feel there is more to learn about how mental health is tackled in other cultures, through techniques and attitudes towards, and that this could be applied to our culture to help those affected more efficiently.

My main role while volunteering would be to support the workers already carrying out this vital work already in the communities of Sri Lanka and to act as a role model for others. I would gain invaluable hands on experience through planning sessions to aid the community by aiming to promote positive mental health through boosting confidence, self-esteem and improving key skills of individuals to help them achieve more. The projects I would be working in are in a wide variety of environments from psychiatric facilities to makeshift classrooms and with a wide range of different people containing various ages, abilities and backgrounds.
