Story
To mark Guy's birthday, and 5 years of our journey with the chronic illness ME/CFS, Guy is going to do a Skydive for M.E. on Saturday 7th October to encourage us all to never give up and to prove that the sky's the limit!
Guy skydives for M.E. Because he can, because he's well and because he wants to show support to all those who aren't able to.
As Guy skydives for M.E. we are reminded of the constant support we've had from our family and friends, and that we haven't had to go it alone. Nobody with a chronic illness such as ME/CFS or Fibromyalgia should have to face it alone. Yet so many struggle on daily, not just with the enormous difficulties and relentless symptoms that this group of illnesses present, but because of stigma and lack of support and awareness attached to these invisible illnesses, even coming from the medical profession itself.
MESIG (ME Support in Glamorgan) is a charity and support group for sufferers of ME/CFS and related chronic illnesses, that supports sufferers and their families in the South Wales area. I was pretty much on a solo journey, facing the life-altering realities of living with ME/CFS back in 2012, when I discovered the MESIG group, that met monthly in my local area. Without them, the support, the awareness events they do, the political and medical campaigning, on a local, national and international level, the voice of ME/CFS sufferers wouldn't be heard.
Many of you may wonder what is ME/CFS? It is estimated that 250 000 people are living with this illness in the UK. It can affect men, women and children, and there are currently no specialists for ME/CFS in Wales, nor is there any cure.
You can read more about what ME/CFS is here and learn more about MESIG.
So as Guy plans to Skydive from the Welsh heights above the Mumbles, Swansea, I plan to stand up for all those that are suffering today with this cruel and relentless illness, that from which I have been a very small minority so blessed to experience recovery and progress year on year.
Many aren't like me, many are bed-bound, wheelchair bound, unable to work, unable to walk, unable to cook for themselves or live anything that resembles a normal life as you would know it.
Let's do what we can to support those suffering behind closed doors. Any small donation you are able to share will help to make a big difference to someone through MESIG.
Thank you especially to my family and friends for walking with me on this journey to date and I'll be sure to get some good pictures of Guy as he jumps from the sky!
*Note: All donations raised will go towards the MESIG charity and not be for the cost of the Skydive itself.
