    Story

    What we are doing

On 8th September, 16 brave competitors will take place in the first annual Scamps' 2 Scamps' Via Scamps' 85km race: 5000ft combined ascent over 72km cycling and 13km running. The challenge begins in Halifax, cycling to Buxworth before ditching the bikes and running the last leg from Buxworth to Buxton.

    Why we're doing it

To raise money for Improving Chances, a non-denominational registered charity which supports mothers and children in Fort Portal and surrounding districts in rural Western Uganda, where 1 in 200 women dies needlessly in childbirth because they cannot reach adequate medical care, and where children damaged at birth or after, from illness or accident, find it hard to access basic health care, therapy and education.

The projects they're currently working on are: - the growth of maternity services at the St Therese of Lisieux Health Unit in the Kyenjojo district where mothers have to travel long distances along dirt tracks to get help in labour. We planned to fund the building of a lying-in ward and delivery suite. - the development of the Good Shepherd School for children with disabilities and special educational needs in Fort Portal, where there are many children at home in their villages, unable to get to school or benefit from the simplest education.

With rain lashing down and big gusts of wind over the moors we were freezing to say the least! It was a constant uphill struggle from start to finish and wasn’t easy by any stretch of the imagination. However we finished!! Heres a photo of the group looking fresh as daisies before we started!
