Story
As climate change increases the frequency and severity of droughts in East Africa, more and more food aid is not the sustainable solution.
For 8 years now the Eyieunoto Nabaya Maasai community have been working to created a more sustainable future for themselves.
They are passionate to solve their own problems and create a better and more positive future for their children, whilst retaining the core values that underpin their unique and valuable culture.
In the last 8 years that have learnt to keep bees to make honey as a food source, basic medicine and for profit. They have cross bred their goats to maintain their drought resistance but increase dairy yield.
They have been running an education project that has supported 100 children through secondary school (secondary education is all fee based in Kenya) and they have 4 students studying at university; the first people from this community to attend university!
In December last year they opened a bore hole to provide a sustainable source of fresh, clean and safe water. The bore hole will be a source of irrigation to grow crops on the adjacent land.
In January this year, like much of East Africa they were suffering from the effects of a drought. The impact of drought is not that people have nothing to drink (although this is of course true) but that the loss of grazing kills the livestock and hence there is no food.
This drought served to strengthen their will and determination to press ahead with growing crops and they have not been idle. They have cleared a few acres of land by hand and with the use of a rented tractor, they have created a nursery for seeds which are now planted and growing.
To complete the project they need a water tank on the land to be cultivated for irrigation, they need tools like spades, hoes and rakes, and a storage shed for tools and crops and some security lighting.
If you would like to make a sustainable we would value your help to prime the pump!

Hi, I am otherwise known as Saruni. In 2001 a dear friend took me to Kenya for the 1st Time when I met and lived with the Maasai. They have taught me a great deal about leadership and in return I am trying to help them to retain their culture sustainably.
