    Story

We are a group of five boys between 6 and 12 years old who have all grown up together on the slopes of Mt Meru in Tanzania. We have been lucky enough to spend time in wild areas with our families and now we want to do something to help protect the animals that live here.

Between the 18th - 21st June, we are planning to climb Mt Meru, at a summit height of 4562m it is the second highest mountain in Tanzania. We are doing this to raise money for the Frankfurt Zoological Society De-snaring Programme in the Serengeti National Park.

Snaring is a real problem throughout the Serengeti resulting in the death or maiming of many wild animals. The Coronavirus outbreak has made the problem worse than ever as many people have lost their jobs and poaching wild animals for food is on the rise. There is also less money from tourism to employ game rangers to protect wildlife. At the moment Wildebeest are particularly under threat with poachers taking advantage of the migration.

But there is hope! Since Frankfurt Zoological Society started their de-snaring programme in 2017 (https://fzs.org/en/projects/serengeti-conservation/serengeti-de-snaring-programme/), more than 40,000 snares have been removed (with over 17,536 snares being removed in just the last six months)! This is a great achievement and we would really like to support this by raising money for this programme. Both of our fathers work in the Serengeti and, as families, we often visit and we want to protect the Serengeti and all the wild animals that live there.

As an example of how much your money will contribute, it costs $1350 to pay the salaries for an 8-man team for a month, $430 to pay for their monthly rations whilst in the field and $620 for the vehicle costs (fuel, repairs etc) for one month in the field.

We know it is a lot to ask but any amount, however small, will go a long way. Thank you.
