    Story

The Scottish Salmon farming industry has a well-established history of using its scale and money to exert influence over policy and politicians. For decades it has worked tirelessly to prevent or delay regulatory and public health measures related to Salmon farming with bad science, corruption and lies. Tobacco industry style tactics from paid lobbyists.

The scale of mortalities in sea cages is also an incredible worry. Over 8 Million salmon died during production in Scotland in 2017-2018!

Fishybusiness, and others, have tried unsuccessfully through Freedom of Information to obtain Government analysis of farmed Salmon samples. Either they deliberately don‘t sample it or they are restricting access to results. We find this totally unacceptable. The public have a right to know what is going on and consumers have a right to know what is in the salmon they eat!

We want a full range of parameters tested for - and the results made public. Maybe there is nothing to find? Maybe, like the Swiss report here on ethoxyquin, the results for Scottish Salmon are through the roof and way over acceptable safe levels. If so, the producers of the salmon will be taken to task on these results and we will speak with the Scottish Government and associated Agencies.

New results out 10/04/19 conclude that emamectin benzoate is killing crustaceans and the residues stay in the ecosystem longer than expected. Are these residues in the salmon flesh? We will see.

We have an independent UKAS Accredited Laboratory in England who are ready and waiting to analyse Salmon samples - the only problem is they aren‘t cheap. It is £875 to run a full suite of analysis for Antibiotics, Emamectin Benzoate (sea lice treatment), Canthaxanthin (synthetic pink colourant) Ethoxyquin (anti putrescent agent), Dioxins (highly toxic pollutants) & PCB (carcinogens).

    Antibiotics - £328 per sample : Emamectin - £98 per sample : Canthaxanthin - £120 per sample : Ethoxyquin - £52 per sample : Dioxin and PCB in a package together for £277.

The target figure is to analyse 2 samples - any more means we can repeat the tests on further samples from other producers. We‘ll pay the cost of the Salmon and shipping ourselves. The results will be published on www.fishybusiness.co.uk and shared on Twitter and our contacts in the media. Thank you!

Thanks for all donations so far, very generous. We are looking into the possibility of a cheaper lab and also testing for typical diseases, viruses & pathogens found in farms pre-harvest which may end up in processed salmon in supermarkets. Although these issues are alleged to unlikely cause any harm to humans, it has been a concern that feedlot operators do not screen for this and merely differentiate on aesthetic grounds whether a fish is viable for market or not. But who really wants to eat a diseased salmon? Onwards and upwards!

Long overdue. If government are not interested it is up to those who care to step up.
