Story
Maizey is an over worked, unloved donkey from Crete who has never known freedom or love.
She is about 25 years old and has been used to work in the mountains carrying weights far in excess of her own, in temperatures hitting 40 degrees, with little or no rest, water or food. She has always been shackled to stop her from escaping and when she has been exhausted she has been beaten to force her to carry on working.
We first encountered Maizey an hour after arriving in Crete for our 1 weeks holiday. She was shackled on a patch of waste land with a bucket of water and a small amount of hay.
My wife and I have always been animal lovers and have 25 animals here in the UK, cats, dogs, horses, a turkey and a cockatiel, most of whom are rescues themselves. Everyday we went and fed her and tried desperately to find her owner so we could see if we could bring her home.
On the last day of our holiday we found the man who owned her and he agreed for us to have her. We visited the local vets to enquire about the tests and vaccinations she would need to satisfy EU regulations to bring her to the UK where we have 10 acres of land.
The money we are raising is solely to cover the costs of transporting her home. These costs are as follows
£840 for lorry hire for 2 weeks with EU travel insurance.
£1000 fuel costs (this is a 5000 mile round trip)
£500 return ferry costs from athens to heraklion.
£400 return ferry costs from dover to calais.
All veterinary bills and passport costs are being met by us at a cost of over £1000 alone.
Why are we doing this? Yes part of it is that we are a little bit crazy but we believe in second chances and Maizey really needs one of those right now.
Any amout of money you can spare can make a real difference to helping her have the life she so truely deserves. Please donate what you can and tell all your family and friends about Maizey and help us achieve something truely special for this little lady.
Thankyou so much in advance
