Topper is an amazing 17 wk old poodle pup who came to our attention through a friend. When he was approx 8 weeks old he got a severe infection in both front feet and during vet visits it became apparent that he had a deformed toe on both of his front feet. It wasn't clear if this was the cause of the infection or had just been noticed because of the infection but both outer digits had no proper joints and it was clear it was very likely to cause him issues as he grew. I have worked with rescue poodles for the last 3 yrs plus and take in private rescues to, of which Topper is the 5th so far. We felt he needed a chance at normal life so we offered to take Topper on and get his feet sorted and then find him his forever home. We had to wait 2 weeks for the infection to completely clear and then my vets removed both outer digit and sent them to the lab to make sure there were no nasties in there. Topper bounced back very quickly although it was a struggle to keep him quiet while his feet healed which finally happened last week but by then another problem had become much worse. Both his front legs were pointing outwards from the ankle joint and it was only going to get worse! Within days he was referred and seen by an orthopaedic vet and today after xrays he had an operation on both legs to cut through the offending bone that wasn’t growing due to growth plate damage to allow his legs to growth straight. If his bones don’t grow to fast apart from more xrays he should be okay but if not then a further op when he is older. Our goal remains the same to get him completely well so we can confidently find him his forever home. Topper still goes into the vets with a wagging tail and kisses for everyone. We have already spent £1k on his toe surgery and referral and today’s bill will be over £3k plus costs going forward for more xrays . While he is insured this isn’t covered but we still feel he deserves every penny to give him a normal life.
