Story

All over the country there are people in need of help, but don't know where to turn to. With your help I want to set up a social welfare pre loved store where the profits made will go to people all over the country that live with these Neurological disorders.

I have suffered with my mental health for many years now without really knowing where to turn to or who to go to that can help me. This comes from a stigma around mental health and people feeling uncomfortable to talk about how they are really feeling. This then leads to further mental health problems that impacts on not only you but your families life too.

This condition is truly life changing - my life is so different compared to before all of this happened to me, as many others out there too. It is a debilatating illness and effects the body in so many mental and physical ways that you wouldn't think was possible, the mind and brain is a powerful thing, the trigger for all of these symptoms is linked largely to mental health. I went from being an independent person who had worked up the ladder in my career, providing for my family in my own way to now relying on others all the time, not being able to work and having my driving licence taken away from me - this was really hard to swallow as I felt everything I had ever worked for had been ripped away from me.

I am one of the lucky people out there that has an amazing support system with my family, who are behind me every step of the way 100%! Who i can quite openly admit whom without, I know I wouldn't be alive today because they are my rock and have helped me get through so many barriers and my reason for carrying on in life.

However, there are so many people out there with mental health problems and neurological disorders who don't have anyone or a support system in their lives. With your help my ultimate goal is to create a social welfare help center for all those who live with a Mental health illness. I want to raise money to create a safe place where people can go and talk about their problems to have a release of that pressure, as well as speak to others with the same condition who know how they are feeling.

Below there is some information on my condition called FND/NEAD.

Functional Neurological Disorder provides an umbrella term for a variety of symptoms of apparent neurological origin but which current models struggle to explain psychologically or organically. Presentation may be similar to a wide range of other neurological conditions.

FND/NEAD can be as debilitating as Parkinson’s disease and MS and have many similar symptoms. The most common misconception is that patients are in control of some or all of their symptoms. The patient does not consciously produce functional symptoms. A patient with conscious control of their symptoms has a different diagnosis such as Feigning, Malingering, or Munchausen Syndrome.

Very few effective treatment plans exist. Physical Therapy is the most effective form of treatment with a goal of re-introducing proper movement and motor control. The most common treatment plan is Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), which yields a 13% success rate [1]. CBT is most effective for patients who have a known psychological connection to their symptoms. Lack of understanding the condition has negatively influenced treatment and care. Researchers, money, and volunteers are greatly needed.

Functional Neurological Disorder can present with any motor or sensory symptoms in the body.

Symptoms include

Bladder and Bowel Changes, Chronic Pain Cognitive Changes, Gait & Balance Problems, Headaches & Migraines, Involuntary Movements ,Paralysis & Weakness, Seizures, Sensory Changes ,Sleep Disturbances, Speech Problems and Visual ChangesThose with a functional diagnosis are not making up their symptoms (malingering). FND Symptoms cause financial, physical, mental and emotional distress and cannot be turned on and off at will. Like many illnesses symptoms may differ or vary from day to day.

Where will your donation go?

With your donation I wish to raise enough money to set up a Mental welbeing center to help all those who live with this long term condition. This money is truly invaluable as it will support people who live with this life changing illness and have a place to go and talk and get some support that they need and deserve.

I want to help raise more awareness of these conditions so that people can be mindful towards others that have it. Just because you can't always see an illness physically doesn't mean that it isn't there or affecting peoples lives.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and I hope that you can try and help in any way possible, any donation is gratefully received.
