    Story

What is the Student Support Centre?

The Student Support Centre (SSC) is a building within Guiseley School run by our SENCO and supported by nine Teaching Assistants, a Targeted Support Lead, as well as other specialist and administrative staff. It is an area of the school where students can feel safe, listened to and understood. It is primarily used by students with special educational needs. The staff there can help students who may need particular therapies in order to thrive in their schooling. You can hear Mrs Gallagher, our SENCO, talk in further detail about the SSC by clicking here.

    George's Challenge

Hi, my name is George and I’m a Teaching Assistant at Guiseley School, working in Student Support Centre and providing support to students who may need a little extra help. Staff in the Student Support Centre (SSC) work across the school providing support to students with a diverse range of need.

I will dedicate one hour each day to walking 5k in my local area for four weeks to reach my fundraising target of £750. This will be in my own free time and outside of the many miles I walk each day around the school. Funds raised will be put towards the range of learning tools used by students accessing support from the Student Support Centre, for example, tablets, laptops, headphones, reader pens and a range of other useful equipment that will enhance students’ learning.

    Why is this a challenge?

As a Type 2 diabetic I must exercise regularly to maintain my glucose levels. During lockdown I found that I wasn’t getting as much exercise as I normally would in school, so I set out for walks each day. Now I want to continue these walks and raise money for the Student Support Centre too.

How can I follow George's Progress?

You can view my progress on the school website at guiseleyschool.org.uk/george and on the school's twitter account (@guiseleyschool ). Look out for my blog, achievement of milestones and the pictures from my walks.

Day 28, Continued - FEELING PROUD, will celebrate at a later date. An incredibly massive thank you to everyone who supported me, my Family, Friends, Neighbours, Colleagues, Parents and Students. You all made it worthwhile and without you it would have been a struggle. Been asked by several people if I will continue my walking and blogs as it's helped them. Some have asked me if they can join me on future walks. Who knows!! Walked a total of 213.70 km for the challenge. Thank you video from school to follow so watch out for it THANK YOU ALL

Day 28, Final walk on a cool overcast day with a few sprinkles of rain. Walked around Peel Park. Wore my Barbados Independence shirt which I wear once a year apart from other special events (dress down day). Was accompanied by Janet my wife and Maureen our friend. Took our time, admired Peel Park and the gardens. Talked about our culture, reminisced, Maureen’s job as a community radio presenter, our jobs, and our work in the community. Took photos at the end of the walk to celebrate our achievement. Completed 6Km felt really proud :-)
