I will be taking part in the Cardiff Bay Run in April, to raise money for the Better Life appeal who are attempting to fundraise to expand the cystic fibrosis unit within Llandough Hospital.

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a life-limiting inherited condition caused by a faulty gene that controls the movement of salt water in and out of cells. This causes mucus to gather in the lungs and digestive system and creates a range of challenging symptoms. More than 2.5 million people in the UK carry the faulty gene, around one in 25 of us - most without knowing. There is currently no cure for cystic fibrosis but many treatments are available to manage it, including physiotherapy, exercise, medication and nutrition. Each week five babies are born with cystic fibrosis, and two people die. More than half of the cystic fibrosis population in the UK will live past 41, and improved care and treatments mean that a baby born today is expected to live longer.

The cystic fibrosis unit at Llandough currently provides specialist CF care to over 280 adult patients from across Wales. It is the only adult CF centre in Wales, and are continually striving to meet the current and future needs of the patients in their care.

The centre aims to provide its patients wiith the best possible care, support, advice and encouragement to meet the needs of each individual and their families who are affected by this life-long disease. The unit is currently undergoing redevelopment and Better Life appeal was launched to raise funds to assist the expansion
