    Story

After the stillbirth of her son Rowan, Rachel Hayden realised that there were many opportunities of memory making and photographs that just hadn't occurred to her in the brief but very special time she spent with him.

She found out that many other bereaved parents felt the same way - disempowered by their circumstances and in shock, they often need someone to guide them through this process helping them to engage with their baby in a truly meaningful way and gather up all the evidence of this special time.

There is no training in this area for health care staff. Many desperately want to help but are unsure what to do for the best.

Rachel discovered the work of Todd Hochberg, US documentary style photographer for bereaved families, and taking his approach and teaching methods along with guidelines from her own experiences, she developed a one day workshop that shows health professionals what is important to bereaved families and exactly how they can help.

The training consultancy Gifts of Remembrance was born as a non profit organisation and Rachel now works full time providing training days around the country and promoting memory making to health care establishments.

The NHS can rarely fund these days which staff who have attended the workshops have frequently stated should be mandatory. Staff usually come in their own time and the course is funded by local charities linked to the hospitals or communities where the training is taking place.

Not all units have access to charitable funds so this is where you can help. We would use any funds collected here to provide training places for staff who otherwise would not be able to attend a workshop.

Each training place costs approximately £50 per person. Staff who have attended the workshops have repeatedly told us it has changes their practice and they now feel more confident in how they can best support bereaved families. The feedback from families too has been amazing.

Thank you so much for the donations w. Although it may not seem much over all in the light of what we are trying to raise - we are nearly able to offer one person a funded training day. That one person who is able to attend one of our training days will go on to support a bereaved family with the knowledge, skill and confidence to provide memories which will become that family's most treasured items. A great cause. One I have benefited from as the mother of a child who was sadly born and buried at 23weeks.
