Story
‘Give me Space’ workshops were set up by Cress Brotherstone (art therapist) and Harley Weir (photographer) to provide inclusive and accessible art therapy to young people. The project will prioritise those who are typically excluded from similar opportunities due to financial and/or cultural barriers, limitations in the current educational system and lack of specialised support.
Through working in psychiatric, community and educational settings it’s become clear that creative therapies, and creative subjects at school are always fighting for space and value-especially in the state sector and more concerningly in special education.
We are raising money for young people from inner city London to become part of Give Me Space’ Workshops- where Artists and designers will work alongside an art therapist to develop a unique experience out of their individual specialism.
Collaborations will take place across breaks in the academic year! where there will be workshops in clothes and furniture design, filmmaking, collage, animation, graphics, photography, ceramics and more.
We hope to expose both artists, young people, and therapists to new ways of seeing and communicating with each other. The creatives involved wouldn’t usually link up with an art therapist, or young influential minds, so there will be a strong emphasis on collaboration throughout.
There will be less emphasis on results, more on the importance of the creative process, and its ability to heal, regulate and build self-esteem. Your donation will help to provide suitable spaces and facilitators, materials, nourishing refreshments and research to back up the process and progress.
‘Give me Space’ hopes to offer young people the chance to explore their full creative abilities.
because we all deserve the opportunity to have a creative future!
