Story
Amy is a 28 year old mum to a gorgeous little girl called Seren who is 16 months old. She is also a newly disabled young woman learning to adapt to a ‘new kind of life’.
She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 5 years ago and quickly found out that she has a very aggressive relapsing remitting MS. Everyone's MS is different but for Amy, it meant a patch of being totally ‘normal’ and able bodied followed by a period of generally high level physical disability.
After falling pregnant, she bucked all of the trends and went significantly downhill. Since then, symptoms have included being unable to walk; losing the use of her arms and hands; losing control of her bladder and bowel; losing her sight and not even being able to hold her head upright. She has also lost the ability to speak as well as suffering fatigue.
She has lived in a single room at home unable to access the other rooms, being totally bedbound for 12 months and although there has been significant improvement from where she was at her worst, she is still limited to either the bed or a chair each day, her living room acts as her dining room, lounge, bedroom and bathroom. Good days are few and far between. In order for her to access her home, she needs to fundraise for an extension quotes are around £70,000 before the addition of the lift which is another £12,000
Several fundraising efforts have already begun to enable Amy to be the mum that she wants to be, the money raised will provide the family with a lift to their daughter’s bedroom, her and her partners own bedroom and a wet room that will be part of an extension to the house, as well as a kitchen which will be wheelchair friendly making the whole house accessible to Amy
Godmanchester Running Club members have decided to help Amy get closer to her fundraising target by dressing up as Santa’s and running round the streets of Godmanchester collecting donations as well as online donations
