Story
The Uganda School Project was set up in 2016 by a group of friends from London, with the aim of supporting struggling schools in Uganda. During the first year they supported Makenya Primary School, in Eastern Uganda. A proper infrastructure was put in place which included the installation of clean water, 5 new classrooms, new teachers, sports programmes, health screening for the community, free lunch for the pupils and for the first time, clean and safe latrines.
Makenya Primary School is set in one of the most beautiful areas in Uganda but was really suffering from government and community neglect. The team managed to convince the local education minister to commit to building a further 5 classrooms and they have mobilised the community to maintain this progress. The community are becoming more self-sufficient every day, taking a huge amount of pride in their school. This has given the project the confidence to expand in other areas moving forward.
As a volunteer I intend to visit Makenya Primary School in April to help in whichever way I can. I would also like to organise a therapeutic/play space within the school to support children with behavioural/emotional needs, should there be a desire or need for such a space.
