    Story

At the village of Great Paxton in Cambridgeshire we are raising money to fund a new memorial to honour the aircrew who died in a crash in the village. Their Lancaster bomber had taken off from RAF Graveley on another bombing mission to Cologne, Germany. It came down 75 years ago, around 3.45 on the afternoon of Christmas Eve 1944. It did not gain height though and having clipped the roof of a house in London Lane it crashed in a field near to what is now Brookside. All seven members of the crew were killed. The oldest was just 24 years old. At present there are no specific memorials to this crew. It will be placed on a grass verge of a private road near to the edge of village, in a location as near as we could find to the crash site. Just to say a final thanks to all who donated and made this memorial possible. Along with other local fundraising efforts we had enough for our needs. The unveiling ceremony went well and a large crowd attended including 18 relatives of the crew.

Final confirmation that the unveiling ceremony will be on Saturday 7th May starting at 2.00 with the flypast at 2.40. If you are planning to travel to attend it would help with our planning if you could kindly let us know. Anyone wanting to eat beforehand in the village should book ahead. Likewise if you wish to visit the Pathfinders museum at RAF Wyton they will need to know 11 days before. Please ask if you require information about how to reserve a space. Many thanks again for your generous support.

We have also arranged for the church at nearby Offord to be open. In it is an area dedicated to RAF Graveley and a wonderful stained glass window. Also we have arranged for the Pathfinder museum at RAF Wyton to be open, if booked in advance, which also has a special exhibition about the crash. We are hoping that relatives of some of the crew will be able to attend Thanks
