    Story

Harper, a wonderfully funny 4 year-old girl who has Cerebral Palsy, is need of our support!

Savagegymwear.co.uk and its partners are raising money through a series of fun filled events, to help raise funds to support Harper in her journey to walk. No child should have to miss out on the joys that life has to offer and the fun of being able to join in with family in friends, and we don’t want to see Harper sitting by watching, any longer.

The NHS unfortunately does not always cover such equipment, leaving families to struggle. Savage Gymwear will not stand by and let this happen and we commit ourselves to helping Harper, we would love you to join us in showing support by donating what you feel you can and importantly, joining us in any of the events we host between January – April 2022 (subject to covid restrictions)

We are raising money to support Harper in obtaining the following:

    • Specialist walker – This is to aid Harper in her independent walking, promoting good muscle strength, learn correct walking gate and movements and support her waking development in order to help her move onto the next stage of her walking ability. This piece of equipment is essential to her development at this early age and if not available to her, will result in long term effects on her ability to walk, including needing major operations, but most importantly have a detrimental affect on her independence and self belief.

    • Specialist Rehabilitation therapy – As important as the walker itself, ongoing therapy is an important part of getting Harper walking. Working with a specialist can support her walking ability, whether that be aided by the walker or Harper developing the skills to walk completely unaided. This key therapy also works on various other aspects of Harper’s gross motor and fine motor ability, to help her develop key skills that support her throughout her life, whilst also maintaining these skills throughout her growth and strengthening her whole body.

    • A fun Day out – A Day out of Harper’s choice, we know she is a big Peppa pig and frozen fan, so we would love to send her on an all expenses trip to enjoy her new walker.

Please take the time to read Harper’s story,

Harper was born at 34 weeks at Queen Alexandra Hospital by induction due to her mother, Tiffany, suffering with severe preeclampsia. When Harper was born, she was unable to regulate her own temperature.

Harper and I stayed together in labour ward for 8 days being taken care of and the midwives had to help Harper to feed, as she was unable to suckle.

The first few months of Harper’s life was very hit and miss as the majority of her first 6 months she cried in what seemed like, being in a lot of pain. There were a number of complications along the way like lactose intolerance, challenges weaning due to continual gag reflex preventing food ingestion.

We noticed there was a developmental delay when Harper was not smiling by 6 months and then by 1 year, she was not able to sit up without falling over and was not meeting the ‘typical’ milestones that she should have met at that age.

Harper never seemed settled unless she was in her mother’s arms and upright, this was the only position. Harper showed signs of pain from early ages but was unable to identify where this was coming from. Her feet were turned inwards from birth, and we were aware there were motor delays, but this took us a long time to get diagnosed.

In April 2019, Harper had an MRI scan under general anaesthetic and her lungs collapsed during this procedure!

After several visits to hospital, Harper’s MRI scan showed periventricular leukomalacia which changes bilaterally, this causes Cerebral Palsy Spastic Diplegia – spasticity pattern, a motor development delay and this has affected her left side and her lower limbs.

One of the key things that stands out with Harper, is that she is extremely determined and she wants to walk. She watches her brother and sister run around and often asks why she can’t chase them too or asks if she can join in.

Harper was told she might never stand or walk, to see her taking steps with aids is incredible for us, watching her smile because she is the same as others is what makes my heart melt every single day. She deserves to be a little girl and a child whilst she can!

One thing that’s for sure, Harper is the sweetest little girl, she is super funny, intelligent and will go so far in life with the right support behind her!

Let’s give Harper what every little girl deserves, the chance to be the best of herself.
