    Story

I saw Mr. Eric Greene sitting on the street outside my office at 1 Northumberland Avenue with some paintings around him. I noticed he would never beg or ask for food or cigarettes. I started chatting with him and learnt that he used to be a self employed carpenter and has been in the UK since 1993 and due to some immigration issues he has been left homeless. He was very eager to get back on his feet and start working but did not know where to begin. He had all documents from UKBA and HMRC with him to support his story.

I decided to have Joshi Advocates (an immigration law firm at 1 Northumberland Avenue) to check his documents and Ms. Khyati Joshi confirmed that his story did in fact have merit. He was granted an Indefinite Leave to Remain in 1995 (old format) and all he has to do is to renew his expired US passport and apply for the new format Biometric Residence Permit endorsing Indefinite Leave to Remain. We decided to help Mr. Greene and Ms. Khyati Joshi has been kind enough to take up his case pro bono.

We only need to raise £820 to help a man legalise his immigration status, start working and get off the streets after being homeless for 19 months. Your donation will help a man get back to his feet in the new year. Please see the letter from Joshi Advocates confirming the merit of his story and costs associated.

He is a Carpenter by profession and any extra money that we end up raising will contribute towards him getting his tools and going back to work which as per him are worth £3500.

Mr. Eric Greene's story in his own words:

I came to the UK in 1993 from South Caroline, United States. I was a respectable carpenter, made a decent living. I got married in this country, had two beautiful daughters, and an indefinite leave to remain.

I’m not a bum, I don’t like begging people for money, so I sketch on the footpath outside 1 Northumberland Avenue, which is also where I live. I’ve even sold a few that I sketched on canvas. It gets me through the week.

I’ve lived here for 19 months now, after I got evicted from my flat. A change in rules caught me unaware. I didn’t realize when the biometric system came into play and soon enough, I was off the records, out of the job market, my house and £7,000 worth of my tools.

My wife and I got divorced a few years ago and I haven’t been allowed to see my daughters for a few years now so they don’t know where I am. Honestly, I hope they never find out. They’re probably in university now. I hope they are, and I hope I get to see them at least once before I, you know, before I die.

I met Harsh (now my local guardian) & Khyati (my lawyer) in this building.

I know how everyone looks at me at first, but I’m not a drug addict. I really just want to get back into the system, get back on my feet, get back to work and make an honest living. I’m really good at my job you know.

With everyone's kindness and support we have raised 100% of our initial target of £820 towards Mr. Greene's visa and passport application fee. His visa application is under process and may take 6-8 weeks. Now we have changed our target to £3500 which will help Mr. Greene buy his carpentry tools and pay for his initial housing to jumpstart his life. BIG THANKS TO EVERYONE !!
