Hello, I’m Hayley, a 4th year Medical Student, and this summer I will be travelling to Malawi with my friend and fellow student Sarah, for an elective with the World Medical Fund where we will provide medical treatment to children in rural villages of Malawi. To help raise money to fund my trip I will be running the Norwich Half Marathon and would greatly appreciate your help and support.
During our 4 week elective, I will be helping to run mobile medical clinics in rural and deprived areas of Malawi. The mobile clinic is the only access to medical care that these children have, and it acts as a GP surgery on wheels, stocked with medicine and carrying a clinical team, able to get to the remotest parts of Malawi and deliver life-saving medical care. This elective is part of my medical degree and will give me the opportunity to experience different healthcare systems and to develop my skills and experience before I enter my final year of study.
A day at the clinic will involve our team treating up to 250 people, mostly children - providing vital support in the form of medical advice, and interventions such as antibiotics, malaria treatments and more. As many of our patients will have walked for miles just to access the clinics, we will stay at the clinic each day until there are no more patients left to see.
I'm really looking forward to my time in Malawi, and consider it a privilege to be able to work with the WMF, who make a huge difference to the health and happiness of children in Malawi, with minimal funding and support.
