    Story

    Who is Jen?

Jen (age 41) single mum of Elijah (age 10) and Isabella (age 12), has been diagnosed with Neuro Endocrine Cancer (NET cancer). Previously fit and well, life has been turned upside down since falling critically ill in Oct 2021.

Jen has stage 4 cancer, so it has spread from her gut to other parts of her body. Medics say NET cancer in general is incurable, although the number of people with cancers who heal naturally is astonishing. It has been seen time and again that the right support, psychological belief in one's self, along with faith and trust in the body to heal itself, can affect prognosis (life expectancy). NET cancer is highly individual, but in general can be managed long term particularly for grade 1 & 2 (grade = speed). Jen has grade 3 and her individual diagnosis means NHS treatments are very limited. Chemo was not successful with further tumour growth and surgeries are not currently an option due to the extensive spread in her liver. The good news is that our livers are wonderful organs that can naturally regenerate. For Jen's prognosis, supporting the liver now is critical.

Currently Jen has one NHS treatment option left, a type of targeted radiotherapy not yet fully trialled in her grade but with the potential to help. This is on hold until she is in better health. It is an intense treatment given every 3 months, 4 in a year. Side effects could affect health, so good mobility, strength and weight is required before starting. Due to cancer related fluid in her legs and pelvic area Jen is currently very weak, with poor mobility and finds it hard to stand up for more than a few minutes. Building up her body and improving weight is also difficult as despite eating very well she has food malabsorption/diarrhoea issues, again linked to her cancer. She is in a catch 22 situation but is working hard to improve it.

What the money raised will be used for

Jen is too ill to work so her lower income affects what treatments she can do. The wonderful NHS fund the radiotherapy, however the non-NHS complementary and natural treatments, backed by solid medical research, which she knows would help heal her cancer and support her to start and tolerate the radiotherapy are not financially affordable. The priority is to get stronger as soon as possible. The target and estimates of non-NHS treatment costs was set up conservatively with what she knew/had tried. Additional funding received will allow Jen the freedom to access other treatments both physical and psychological recommended by cancer specialists.

Traditional Chinese Medicine supplements which Jen used to support her immune system for prior/during and recovery of chemo treatment. Whilst the chemo didn't work on the tumours, the supplements had a very positive effect on her immune system keeping her blood platelets, vitamin levels etc all in perfect order so she could sustain treatment and recover from it. These supplements would also support the radiotherapy. Testament to its positive effects she took a two week break from the supplements a month ago and then straight after was unexpectedly admitted to hospital needing blood transfusions as her blood levels were all out! Costs £400 per month.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy which helps with mobility, tumour inflammation, and repair of damage to cells and organs. Jen tried this once recently and found it to be very helpful for mobility. Costs £40 per session. Total cost based on 6 months weekly sessions (£1040) as mobility is very poor now and to cover first 2 radiotherapy sessions, then 6 months fortnightly sessions (£520) in the hope that mobility and fitness will improve over time but with the expectation that it will still be affected by the two remaining radiotherapy sessions.

Infrared sauna treatment for pain relief, detoxification of the liver and removal of toxins and acid accumulation in the body that would mitigate the formation and spread of cancer. Costs £125 per month.

Coffee enema treatments which produce glutathione, a strong antioxidant, removes toxins and detoxes the liver. Costs £250 for 3 sessions, estimate for two a month £167.

Other potential treatments that could cost will pop up over time (e.g lymphatic drainage, biological therapies, private physical or psychological support for the family etc. Initial target estimated a conservative £100 per month. Any additional funding received would go towards Jen being able to access treatments she never dreamed possible.

Jen also does not have the financial means to pay for the many modifications and adaptions needed- for example she can no longer bend to access her under counter fridge and freezer so she needs to buy taller stand up fridge freezers, a recliner chair to keep her legs elevated, bathroom/bedroom/kitchen modifications, adaptive equipment etc. Initial target estimated a conservative £300 per month. Any additional funding received would enable more flexibility in what is needed.

    Positivity and hope

Jen is naturally a private person and asking for financial help makes her cringe! Now her financial circumstances are known for the forseeable, she has realised that the only way to give healing it's best shot is by accepting financial help from others. She is very positive and full of hope and determination to heal.

Anything you can financially donate is very much appreciated. I also truly value local offers of practical help (have a van, or skill like an electrician/plumber/some good muscles that could help with home adaptations?). Healing thoughts and prayers are also incredible and truly give me strength (Jen)

Jen's Dad's message continued (last page)... With so many cruel people in the world, Jenny stood out like a shining star and we keep asking ourselves why she was taken away from us. However, the genuine warmth, compassion and support from her family, many friends and work colleagues alike over the past 8 months has demonstrated there are still many lovely and decent people in the world and we cannot begin to thank you enough. Jen's Dad's message continued... We have spoken to a number of people already who donated and it is their wish that the money they donated go to Isabella and Elijah so that we can provide them with experiences and opportunities that Jen would have liked to have done with them. Both Cath and I will ensure any applicable funds will be managed with the utmost integrity and will be solely for the benefit of Jenny's children.

Jen (age 41) single mum to Elijah (10) and Isabella (12) has cancer that has spread to other organs. The only NHS treatment is a radiotherapy currently not possible due to poor health. Non-NHS complementary treatments would help greatly, but the family cannot finance them.
