Weʼve raised £290 to Conservation research in Honduras, funding a volunteer research assistant for Opwall

    Story

Operation Wallacea (Opwall) is a conservation research network of academics across the globe which rely on undergraduates as volunteer research assistants for data collection and research. The price for this expedition in Honduras is £2225, and will cost around £3000 in total with equipment, flights and vaccines. I have already paid for some of my expedition and my flights and I would like some help in funding the rest
Each expedition seeks to improve biodiversity via data collection and socio-economic sets for conservation management.
So far Opwall has massively contributed to conservation, publishing over 280 peer reviewed papers, discovering 37 new species, increasing education and training for communities for the protection of vital habitats and species. This has been through funding and undergraduate research assistants.
I will be spending 3 weeks in Cusuco National Park, monitoring habitats, invertebrates and mammals. Just one of the projects in Honduras is focusing on Chytrid fungus which has devastated amphibian populations and has caused the extinction of many species. This research is vital for monitoring species and habitats over large periods of time and directly combating extinction and habitat loss.
Then in my last week I will be in Utila monitoring coral reefs and aquatic organisms. Coral reefs are at threat across the globe and are dying at alarming rates, and without coral many diverse ecosystems will not survive. Pollution, overfishing and disease are to blame and close monitoring and research is a way to help save reefs and their populations.
If the environment and conservation is something that is important to you then funding scientific research will greatly help the effort to preserve species and their habitats. Feel free to donate or share :)
