On of our workers is embarking on an epic bike ride to raise money for On the Out. These are his words
My story in short
Well after coming out of the army at 21 I found myself living on the streets and with nowhere to go and no one to turn to. I started using drugs, crack and heroin as it helped me though the desperation I felt. With this my mental health kicked off. Over the next few years I was using , and in and out of jail as i had to fund my habit. To be honest i could see no way out, until i was nicked for a burglary and given a drug treatment and testing order. I decided to go to rehab, which i did. After spending 18 months in rehab i was clean and since then i have been clean and over the last 2 years been working with people who have been were i am. I hope to give them the help and support i never had and make positive changes in their lives.
I am doing a charity bike ride to raise money for On the Out, from Manchester to Cardiff. I will be doing this on remembrance Sunday and have set myself the goal of beating the time which its says on google maps, this is 17 hours and 2 mins.
I am raising money for ON THE OUT, who help people coming out of prison and also people with multiple and complex needs. It is a fairly new charity and not only would I like to raise money for them i would also like to raise the profile so they can help more people,
The reason I am doing this is because me myself have come from a background of, drugs, prison, mental health and also being homeless, so a charity like this is very close to my heart. As I said it would be on remembrance Sunday, the reason I chose this is because I am an ex royal engineer and though it would be very fitting not only to raise money for ON THE OUT but a personal tribute to the men and woman that died fighting for us to be free.
Thank you from us all at On the Out. Any money raised will go directly to support the welfare of people leaving custody, as they strive to overcome many of the barriers facing them.
