This page was created to support Giada, age 21, who was first diagnosed with a rare disease when she was 14. She is affected by a Complex Chiari malformation and syringomyelia.

She needs an urgent surgery which will be performed in New York by the end of November 2017 at South Nassau Communities Hospital.

Without the surgery she will end up on a wheelchair, living with chronic pain and other neurological disorders.

All the surgery and travel costs will be paid by the family and include operating theatre, neurosurgeons, anaesthesia, hospital bed, rehabilitation and a family member to support Giada. The surgery alone costs almost 120000 £.

Giada has 90% of chance to regain complete use of her legs and will lose 25% of neck mobility.

Giada is the sister of my maid of honour. She was a cheerful kid and now is a beautiful young woman hoping to have a normal life. I want to support her because money should not stand on the way of people health.

In Giada's own words: " I have been looking for medical explanations to my symptoms and listened to doctors' surgery proposals that won't resolve my condition anyway. My pathology is rare and is not studied very much. No one gave me any certainty, they asked me to undergo another decompression surgery otherwise I would end up in a wheelchair. However it would not eliminate Syringomyelia.
Someone even told me to give up, do not intervene at all, because the surgery could be dangerous and not worth the risk.

Finally I contacted a neurosurgeon, highly specialized in my illness, who shed light of my condition. He knows how to help me, he studied my pathology, explained that it will be a four-handed, difficult and delicate surgery. I'm scared, a lot. America is far away and frightens me, but in Italy they can't help me. I want to undergo this delicate surgery, but the neurosurgeon wants me there for late November - early December,because my conditions could get worse soon."
