Before Christmas on our community group a lady posted asking for donations for some families she was supposedly helping who had nothing for Christmas. One member, a man in his sixties who had lost his wife two years previously and had some money put aside for his retirement after downsizing, offered to donate a modest amount of cash to help the families. Sadly following on from that, pleas of poverty began from the woman, asking to borrow small amounts of cash to begin with, then larger amounts as she pretended to be starting an Open University course. This spiralled to just under £11000 over 4 months before he finally started to accept what he hadn't wanted to believe, and contacted us to say he thought he had been scammed. We are hoping we can between us perhaps raise some of that money to replace it, but much more importantly, to show him that people care, and there are many more good people like him.
