    Story

Birders Against Wildlife Crime (BAWC) launched Hen Harrier Day in 2014 to raise awareness of the serious persecution suffered by Hen Harriers. Despite full legal protection since the early 1950s, Hen Harriers remain absent from vast swathes of the UK. They are now almost extinct as a breeding species in England, primarily because of illegal persecution on intensively managed areas of upland grouse moor.

Historically, the Hen Harrier was a common and widespread bird of prey. Changes in land use meant it lost many lowland breeding sites, and so retreated to breed on upland moors. Despite having the highest level of legal protection available across the UK and the EU, persecution by gamekeepers employed on grouse shooting estates followed. In recent decades, numbers have declined markedly as the management of grouse moors has intensified.

Hen Harrier Day has quickly become an annual fixture, growing from a single rally in the Peak District in 2014 to 12 events in 2016 across the UK, including several events in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Tayside and Central Scotland Raptor Study Groups will be hosting another Hen Harrier Day event in 2017 to continue to raise awareness of the widespread persecution of raptors within the Scottish uplands and to continue to highlight the need for the Scottish Government to introduce a state regulated system of licensing of gamebird hunting.

Currently there is no mechanism to collect funds prior to the event to help with the hiring of equipment. Following the event last year when strong winds resulted in the early closure of the event at RSPB Loch Leven on Saturday 6th August and the cancellation of the event planned in the Highlands on Sunday 7th August, there is the need for a more robust venue to host any 2017 event.

Just as we actively promoted Mark's Grouse Moor Petition so we support any attempt to draw attention to, and to protect raptors at risk in these areas.
