    Story

    Thank you for visiting our page:

    Funded by charitable donations, Treak Community Centre in Siem Reap, Cambodia provides free education to over 350 children and young people every day. The parents and families of Treak’s students faced the challenges of going to school during and after the Khmer Rouge period. They and our teachers share the generally held belief within Cambodian society that education has been, and continues to be, an important factor in Cambodia's peace and stability following the horrors of the recent past.

    Treak is making a difference. The centre runs a thriving early years’ programme, and provides classes in English and other subjects such as science, arts & crafts, geography, health and nutrition, environment, and personal development. There is also a well-stocked library. These classes are important and compliment the subjects taught in primary schools. In addition to educating and opening up real opportunities for children, their Community Support Programme assists parents and the wider community through information workshops, training programmes, and employment. Their programmes enable children and adults to learn new skills, which then increase people’s confidence and self-worth, and help people take control of their own futures. Indeed, their overarching philosophy is to create opportunities not dependency.

    We need your help to help the school.

    Treak has been very fortunate, and extremely grateful, for the donations received from supporters since early 2020 when Covid-19 effectively shut down tourist visits to Cambodia. These have helped to cover the basic running costs of around £2,400 per month during this difficult period.

    The situation is certainly beginning to improve and almost all Covid related travel restrictions have been lifted in Cambodia. However, whilst it’s now easy to enter Cambodia again, travel restrictions remain in several countries, making it difficult for travellers and volunteers to return and support the school on the ground. This is likely to affect people’s travel plans well into 2023 and international visitor numbers will take time to recover.

    Please support the work done by Treak Community Centre and safeguard the future of the school through these difficult times, which are lasting longer than anyone thought.

    Regular Giving through the Treak Bare Necessities Club:

    Monthly donations are much appreciated and bring stability to Treak’s finances. Regular monthly donations help to cover the costs of their £2,400 a month ‘bare necessities’.

    How your monthly donation could help:

    £5 a month could pay for workbooks to give to children who are unable to access lessons online during the pandemic.

    £10 a month would provide one child with a month of lessons at Treak.

    £30 a month would pay for the printing/photocopying paper.

    £50 a month would pay the electricity bill.

    £150 a month would pay a teacher’s salary.

    All monthly donors will have the opportunity to opt in as members of the Treak Bare Necessities Club and receive:

    • an email introduction to the club;

    • be able to connect directly with staff and other supporters through the private Bare Necessities Club Facebook Group;

    • receive regular updates on Treak’s activities, expenditure, and future plans;

    • have the opportunity to engage more closely with, and provide support to, the Treak community.

    All donations, whether one off or regular, are much appreciated and help safeguard the future of the school, enabling Treak Community Centre to continue its work to educate vulnerable children and support the parents and wider community in Treak village.

      Maurice Wilkinson, pictured at Treak in 2012, sadly passed away in April 2022 aged 96; he was a long time follower of Treak Community Centre and loved watching Facebook updates, videos and pictures of the school, the students and especially the Annual Treak Trek bike ride. He visited Cambodia when he was 86 years old and fell in love with the country and the people. In his memory, Jane Reas and her sister and are asking family and friends who would like to, to make a donation to Treak Community Centre, a cause very close to his heart.

      **Stop Press** We are so grateful to have met our target and thank everyone for all the support we've received. The extra funds are much needed to pay our staff and keep the school running through these difficult times, and we've therefore increased our target to £10,000. We still have over 100 miles to pedal and it's likely to be monsoon conditions. Your support is a great encouragement to the riders who pass on their personal thanks for all the help you are giving to the children at Treak.

      Everyone at Treak thank you for your friendship and support. Headteacher Dara and the staff are providing work books and activity sheets, on Mondays and Tuesdays with pencils, crayons, paper so students can work from home. Around 60% call each week:they are eager to learn! Parents and community leaders told Dara they greatly value the help that Treak provides. The education ministry prefer schools not to reopen until October/November; Covid-19 will severely cut our income over the next 12 months. Any financial help is much appreciated.
