Story
Who are we?
We are INDRA (the International Development of Reconciliation through Art), as a group we wanted to contact you personally and tell you more about who we are and what we do. We are a group of 5 young people who are trying to have an impact on our community by using art as a tool for change.
We meet each week to discuss issues that affect young people and the wider community and develop those discussions further into pieces of art to implement change.
This July we have the opportunity to attend a world congress in Durban, South Africa and we were wondering if you could help and assist us in achieving this dream and ambition
We are the newest member of the INDRA congress and as a group we have never met another INDRA member outside of Gorse Hill Studios. Manchester has been the heart of political change throughout history from Marx and Engels to Pankhurst and Turing, we have suffered unimaginable tragedies from the Peterloo massacre to the IRA bombs to the most recent Manchester arena attacks, we have been the forefront of the civil rights movements champions of the LGBT+ community, and now we are the representatives of our city and this is our opportunity to go and meet and share our stories with other INDRA members and be Manchester’s next big movement.
We are a city of conflict, we are a city of resolution and we celebrate our differences.
What is Indra?
"Many of the young participants with Indra come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Most of them cannot rely on the support of parents and families to help them take part in this life-transforming experience. Indra is not a core funded operation and we will rely on the goodwill and generosity of supporters and friends to make the Indra Congress vision a reality."
Mission Statement:
"The mission of the Indra Congress is to make available to young people from fractured communities and settings of personal and social conflict art forms through which they can express their needs and ambitions for equitable and just human relations.
We aim to provide a network of safe, creative spaces in which young people can share stories, give expression to their thoughts, feelings and aspirations and explore strategies for dealing peacefully and effectively with challenging situations in their lives and communities.
Our vision is to use the language of the arts to promote empathy and to connect young people to their peers elsewhere in the world. They can thereby learn more about themselves from each other and build relationships across boundaries. From this experience they may become makers of change in their own communities and advocates for justice in civil society."
